Another Kind of “Litter Clean-Up”

Feral ChangeSarah Rogers of FeralChange.org, has set up a recovery space at AmSteel for feral cats she’s had spayed and neutered. Increasing her work space has enabled her to rescue TEN cats per week!

A majority of these cats are released after their procedure, but some are “socialized,” like Boris, the fourteen month old orange tabby who is now set up in his own kitty condo hoping to be adopted.

FeralChange.org is always looking for food and bedding donations, and often needs to find homes for socialized cats looking for a family.

If you are interested in donating goods or time, need help with TNR, or want to make a date to meet Boris, please contact Sarah at sarah@feralchange.org

ogcard-oaklandnorthThis holiday season, put your money where your heart is and help support local business with the Oakland Grown Card. Books, bikes, food, drink, clothing, pampering; it’s all here, and it’s all Oakland.

The Sustainable Business Alliance, a local non-profit committed to building a just and thriving sustainable local economy, has partnered with an ever growing list of locally-owned businesses and local artisans to help create local jobs and tax revenues for necessary city services, and build stronger community in Oakland. If 10% of Oaklanders spent $50 a month with the OG Card, we could re-direct over $20 million dollars back in to our community in just one year.

The new card includes rewards points, called OakShares. As a loyal local shopper, you earn 5 points every time you spend 5 dollars or more, redeemable for discounts, products, services, or store credit.

The Magic of Our Community

Amsteel Mural GW03Once upon a time, Leslie Pritchett saw something on our “fantasy list” that made her exclaim with joy and inquire, “When is that going to happen?”

The fantasy was to paint our logo on the front of the building and add the word STUDIOS after the name AMERICAN STEEL that had been painted on the façade decades ago.

We didn’t have the knowledge, time or resources to make that happen, but Leslie didn’t see this as an obstacle. She called her friend Simon Clarke from Seattle to come down with his high powered projector. Andrew Johnstone volunteered to sketch the projection on the wall, and suddenly this fantasy was becoming a reality.
American Steel Studios would like to heartily thank those many fabulous souls who donated time, equipment and pizza to help make this project come to fruition!facade1

Leslie for her extraordinary knack for making magic happen,
Andrew for overcoming his fear of heights and sketching the artwork,
Simon for working late nights 30′ in the air operating the projector,
Nick Gardner, Michelle Burke, Leslie Isaac, Splob, Margaret Long, Sally Brown and Anne Olivia Eldred for painting for hours, and hours, and hours,
PG+E for generously cutting the power to allow us to do this work safely,
and United Rentals for the boom-lifts!

American Steel Studios is truly the kind of place where one can fantasize about a project, and the energy, tools and resources to do it somehow materialize. On to the next fantasy!

Dan Seneres AKA Splob

If you’ve ever wondered about the pink tiger being pedaled around American Steel but weren’t able to catch up with it, read our interview with it’s operator and creator, Dan Seneres. His mixed-media art and illustrations create fantastical landscapes, give plants a thrill, poke at the status quo or just give folks something to smile and think about. Upper West Trunk

A.S. : What do you do?
D. S. :  By day I create art for films in the entertainment industry, from producing story boards to production and set design, I have created miniatures for films and I create special effects. Sometimes I AM the entire art department! I also create comic books, produce multi-media art ranging from interactive sculpture, two-dimensional work and bicycles to articulated tails for humans!

A.S.: Why do you do what you do?
D. S. : As an illustrator, designer, and mixed media artist I work in two and three dimensions using a wide variety of mediums and techniques. Art is also my form of meditation, and the art I make for myself is for expression, experimentation, and pure pleasure. My work is whimsical and my subjects come from the world of my imagination. I enjoy bringing to life concepts and images I envision in my minds eye.  As opposed to interpreting objective reality; the world of my imagination is more interesting to me. My work also frequently explores themes involving the conflict between nature and technology. In the end, nature is always the victor.

When he learned of the Living Wall being built on the façade of American Steel Studios, Dan built a Ferris Wheel that seats eight potted plants. His rationale was that the plants on the wall might get bored and need some recreation.

A.S. : What brought you to AmSteel?
Splob : I was born in San Francisco and raised in the East Bay; I’ve lived in Oakland for over 20 years. A few years ago, I got a job for a commercial where I had to make a roll of tape that could be operated by remote control, starting and stopping on a dime, this required finding a studio space of my own, so I came and knocked on the door at AmSteel. I had a short time frame to work in, and I had shot a film here at AmSteel in 2009, so I knew the facility would be a good match for me.

A.S. : Whats your favorite part of being here?
Splob : I feel free to spill paint on the floor. It’s affordable, I have privacy.

Splob is often holed-up in his studio for weeks at a time, exiting upon his Pink Tiger Bike to go home late at night, or take a spin through the building. When he finally emerges, it’s obvious he’s been pouring buckets of energy into new creations.

A.S. : What do you contribute to the Amsteel Community and to West Oakland?
Splob : Hijinks…  I helped organize American Steel Studios’ Art + Industry Exhibit in May, I contribute my art to public events and showcases including the recent Sustainable Business Alliance Mixer. DanSeneres

Though Splob can be modest his art makes people happy, adding color and joy to this place, participating in community gatherings and riding around on the coolest bicycle in the world. His multi-media exhibit at the 2012 Art + Industry Exhibit was spectacular and we are looking forward to the next show!

A. S. : How can people get involved with you?
Splob : Dinner-movie-flowers…I’m easy. But seriously, I will be starting to work with an intern, teaching my craft and helping inspire the youth of the neighborhood. I am also available for commissions, general art needs, and all around fabrication. Thank you Splob!!!

Gateway Park needs YOUR Voice!

Proposed Park Plan

Proposed Park Plan

This plan has long been in the works, taking many shapes over many long months. Now is the time for YOU to come and have some opinion, inspiration and voice in this epic project!

More than 10 years ago, the Bay Bridge design team identified a unique opportunity to create a signature park that joins the power and beauty of the new East Span of the Bay Bridge to the fascinating natural, industrial and transportation history of the East Bay and, as such, creates a bold new gateway to the City of Oakland. Representatives of nine local, regional, and state agencies embraced that idea and began to explore the possibilities of a new park.

The completion of the September 2012 Gateway Park Project Concept Report initiated a strategy for the park planning. A public scoping meeting in November 2013 is an important element of the environmental review process. The proposed park plan weaves the spectacular Bay setting with the waterfront experiences of the Bay Trail, embraces the Port’s and Oakland’s dynamic industrial setting, invites people of all ages and interests and, at the heart of the new park, puts the spotlight on the Bay Bridge and its history.

Next Steps

A public scoping meeting in November 2013 began the environmental review process for the project.  Materials from the meeting are available here:

A second public meeting may be held in the spring of 2014. The environmental review process is scheduled for completion in 2015. The design phase is proposed to kick off in early 2015, with construction beginning in 2017.
