Department of Spontaneous Combustion Awarded Burning Man Grant

We are pleased and proud to announce that our beloved tenants in Bay 4, The Department of Spontaneous Combustion, have been awarded a Burning Man Grant to build Mens Amplio.
mensamplio_clr_595Mens Amplio will be a 15 foot tall model of a human head and brain, designed by Don Cain and built by a team of artists from a wide range of disciplines. The brain will incorporate an array of light and flame effects controlled by a participant through the use of an EEG headset.

The headset will translate the participant’s shifting mental and emotional state into patterns of light and fire mimicking the images of clinical brain scans in real time.

The MA crew will bring together expertise in brain imaging and neural interfaces, LED and flame effects, and metal fabrication to create a sculpture that bridges the worlds of art and science.

Sprouting up on city buildings, in homes, museums, hotels, and now on our building in the industrial center of West Oakland, the development of new techniques and creative reuse of materials is making it possible to grow gardens almost anywhere.

Groundation Foundation: The Grounds the Limit!

groundation logo

Our first project is building a stunning Green Wall in West Oakland – fed by a solar-powered, 2820 gallon rainwater harvesting system, showering the sidewalk with led rainfall and a wonderland of new plant habitat built with nearly 100% recycled materials.

The sound of water falling and lights keeping the sidewalk more pedestrian-friendly will continue year round powered sustainably through the sun and rainfall.

This will connect to the biological corridor already begun by the City of Oakland along Mandela Parkway, a native habitat and walkway, irrigated with recycled water.

Cleaning up West Oakland

Cleaning up West OaklandUS Military veterans and local artists came together to clean up over 2,000 lbs of trash in West Oakland as part the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. National Day of Service. The cleanup was organized by Petty Officer Second Class Thom Heavey, US Coast Guard Reserve, the head of the newly formed Veterans Arts group Oakland ARTillary, a project of American Clothing Experiment.

“Community Cleanups are a great first place for people to get involved, have a direct community impact, and meet other community members.” Thom chose the public areas on Mandela Parkway and Grand Avenue for two reasons: need and opportunity.  “West Oakland has become a dumping ground and small piles of garbage attract big piles of garbage.  By organizing the clean up near American Steel studios, we had the opportunity to help maintain the beautifully landscaped corridor of Mandela Parkway while introducing the vets to the American Steel artists.”  Thom speaks passionately about the healing power of the arts for the vet community, having been inspired by the veterans who create large scale fire sculptures at American Steel.  Large scale art utilizes skills learned in the military while providing a creative and constructive outlet, helping define a sense of identity and purpose.  Oakland ARTillary also heavily stresses the “of service” aspect of their work.  “Vets are so dedicated to the concept of service that they were willing to give their lives for it.  By reestablishing positive ways for vets to be of service in their own communities and encouraging creative construction and positive outlets in vets lives, we build stronger communities and help build a better, healthier, stronger America.”

Next projects for Oakland ARTillary? A Spring Art Exhibit featuring veteran artists is scheduled for April and the next Litter Patrol Project is February 18th, Presidents Day, in Fruitvale.  Connect with them on facebook (www.facebook.com/americanclothingexperiment) and find out more at www.americanclothingexperiment.org
