Ryon Gesink

A human hamster wheel that generates electricity for charging cell phones. A vehicle built from a satellite dish. Fire breathing gargoyles made from motorcycle, car, and vacuum parts. These are just a few of Ryon Gesink’s creations.

If you are lucky enough to wander through his studio, you just might meet his “goldfish,” a Russian gas mask sculpture that is constantly spinning. It’s rather like being a little kid in a world of giant and magical toys, Willy Wonka meets Hugo and the City of Lost Children. Ryon’s work is so unique and has so much personality we just had to pry a little…

AS: Why do you do what you do?
Ryon: I forget, honestly. Inner compulsion meeting external possibility. If an idea nags at me for over 6 months, I will probably end up making it. It hasn’t gotten boring yet. I’m cursed with this “thing” that I have to do. I see other people who are messing with things and from that I get ideas. Those who’ve gone before and done something incredible, combined with my own brain assembling ideas is like an ethereal embryo that wants to be born. It nags and nags and nags until I manifest it. Then I’m  briefly satisfied until the next idea comes along.

AS: What brought you to Oakland:
Ryon: Its Jack Kerouac’s fault…
I came to AmSteel in 2009 because it was the only game in town that provided the space, environment and equipment necessary to support my business.  Four years later I’m still here because of its location, and there are good folks around; a veritable army of hirable fabricators, word of mouth job referrals, the occasional lending of tools and materials, the overhead cranes… and I’ve got some old pals here.

AS: Where has your work been exhibited:
Ryon: Burning man for 8 or 9 years, The Crucible’s Fire Arts Festival, various galleries in San Francisco. I was project manager and lead fabricator for a huge Public Arts sculpture in Goodyear, Arizona. It was 40′ tall, 60′ long, with lots of curving steel pipes and tubing, we built it here in Bay Four. AmSteel was necessary for that project. I guess it could have been built in an outdoor lot, but the crane was indispensable, and we couldn’t have done it anywhere else with the budget we were on.

AS: Tell us about your work:
Ryon: My business runs the gambit of custom metal work – from fabrication of small scale pieces for construction projects, architectural features, railings and staircases and “big heavy duty construction stuff” – to planter boxes, furniture, large scale public art, sculpture and art cars. I have been doing metal art for 12 years. My first project? A replication of a Vietnam era grenade launcher for launching fireworks at my friends in high school.

We are happy that Ryon just sold pieces from his MotoFurniture Collection, which means he’s anxious to make more. Another reminder to lock up your bike!

Living Wall at American Steel Studios

Living Wall at American Steel Studios

Date: May 28, 2013

Great things are happening in Oakland. American Steel Studios, a warehouse converted into studios for industrious artists, has adopted the ‘Groundation Foundation‘, and together, they are building a living wall for the side of the warehouse facing Mandella Parkway near 20th Street. The team that’s assembled includes ambassadors, artists, gardeners, and water engineers – activists dedicated to the project. They are design/building a steel-based foundation to hold thousands of refuse yoghurt containers filled with no fuss plants that require little water. The group is acting big. Already they have built a planter box, all along the warehouse’s east side, filled with vines to support birds and perennial wildflowers for bees and buterflies. The team also has plans to remove concrete below the new living wall – see photo above!

American Steel Studios is a complete metalworker haven, and sparks fly as Nick Gardner welds the first 10 x 8 foot frame with a grid offset to hold the planted yoghurt containers at a slight outward and skyward angle. Light streaming into the warehouse gives objects the sharp glisten of possibility.

The ‘Groundation Foundation’ and American Steel Studios are good neighbors. They want to connect the outdoors to what’s going on inside with this living wall. The City of Oakland has also taken an interest in the project and has donated two 2,825-gallon rain catchment cisterns and is considering living walls in general, a way to discourage graffiti. Sweet to imagine the City of Oakland’s walls covered with vines and plants. In my utopia, these will support bird species, pollinators, and butterflies while also adding beauty, water transpiration and a living canvas for garden artists.

The warehouse roof sheds just under 6-million gallons of rain, which now flows over impenatrable streets, into the sewage system, and eventually to San Francisco Bay. Though a mere drop in the bucket, the project will collect 5,650 gallons of water that will water the living wall via a solar-powered pump.

Again in my utopia, I imagine harnessing this community’s fortitude, amply funding their efforts, and infusing their brains with the best engineering and technological resources we have available. I am sure they’ll be working toward their vision, and I can’t wait to see the wall installed.

How to contribute? Bring your yoghurt and similarly-sized, take-out containers and plant clippings to 1960 Mandela Parkway, West Oakland (enter on 20th Street, look for the Nursery). And keep your eyes peeled next time you’re cruising along Mandella Parkway, and check to see if the new living wall is in place!

Have you ever wished you could read minds? If so, go to Burning Man this year and check out Mens Amplio (Latin for “expand your mind”).

What is it?

Mens Amplio will be a 15 foot tall model of a human head and brain, designed by Don Cain and built by ateam of artists from a wide range of disciplines.

The brain will incorporate an array of light and flame effects controlled by a participant through the use of an EEG headset. The headset will translate the participant’s shifting mental and emotional state into patterns of light and fire mimicking the images of clinical brain scans in real time.

Essentially, if you’re hooked up to this giant playa brain, fire and colored lights will show the crowd what you’re thinking and feeling in response to certain stimuli, at least in a general sense. I can imagine so many naughty tricks we could play with this crazy machine.

The Ignite.me team had the opportunity to ask the Mens Amplio designer a few questions about the inspiration and philosophy motivating their work.

What is the story behind the concept? How’d you come up with such a wild and fantastic idea?

The idea for this project was sparked when I saw the cover of the December 2012 Smithsonian Magazine.  My first thought was, “Wow, that’s a really clever way of depicting a brain.”  Of course, with my background in making large scale art, the ensuing thought was, “That would look really fantastic if it was huge and made out of steel!”  The following weeks brought embellishments to the idea.  Its final design incorporated my background and experiences in med tech, electronics, fabrication and fire effects.

Who will wear the EEG headset? Random volunteers? Or is it more of a scheduled demonstration?

The hope is that people passing by us will see that there is something going on in the crowd and notice that others are lined up to take a spin at it. There won’t be “demonstrations” scheduled; we want the people to participate and try it for themselves and experience the interactive aspect of the use of their own brain activity controlling the light and fire show.

“You notice a crowd gathered around the head and around a person seated on the ground in front of the head…The crowd is interacting with the seated person who is wearing a headset. As the mood of the seated person changes – at times with the prompting of the crowd – the patterns of light and fire change.” Should the headset wearer be scared? What are you going to have that crowd do to us?

If the headset wearer is in a focused and meditative state, the light and fire will reflect this. If the headset wearer gets excited or roused up all of a sudden, the crowd will see and they too will become energetic. It may be that the participant is focusing really hard to calm their thought and their friends circle around and provide a challenge by distracting the headset wearer. There are many variations of ways to have fun with the interactive aspect of our sculpture!

Is there any way to estimate how many hours you and your crew will log on this installation?

Total hours to build it should be close to 1500 person hours…..

What do you hope we take away from the interaction with your project? Any particular ideas or emotions you hope to elicit?

Rather than taking away a specific, single emotion, I think the fun of our project comes from playing with the experience of how our emotions ebb and flow. The participant gets to play with the shifts and changes which are naturally constant within our brain and find personal meaning within the context of the art sculpture’s atmosphere.

How can people who are interested in your project help you?

Our supporters can visit us on the web at ma-brains.com for news and events. Soon, we will be publishing an Indiegogo fundraising campaign where people can donate to help the project. In exchange for the donation, we’ll give out prizes and Mens Amplio swag. If we meet our fundraising goals, we look forward to taking the sculpture to local Bay Area schools for hands on/interactive education in science, art, and technology.

Groundation Foundation Build Nights! Every Turesday

groundation logoWe are a growing group of inspired individuals encompassing a wide variety of skill sets, with a common vision for community engagement and neighborhood beautification.  We are artists, landscape designers, water conservationists, habitat architects and enthusiastic program developers and fundraisers. We are making our communities better using reclaimed materials, recycling, and doing educational outreach.

Every Tuesday night from 7-9pm we come together to learn and progress in new skill sets in an incredible skills share.  We are learning to weld, practicing under the expert tutelage available at American Steel Studios.  We are learning about plants, pollinators, and gardening from the green house and nursery teams, about living walls and urban green spaces, about pollinators and their struggles and importance in cities, about storm drain issues, runoff, water ways and catch water systems, about solar power and its strengths and weaknesses and best use in our setting.  About community building, and the power of groups to creatively address issues of dumping, graffiti, air and soil quality, and the power that each of us has to contribute to change.

Most of all, this night is FUN. We get to play, laugh, share and grow together. This rapidly growing team has won our hearts, and we welcome you to come join!  There are a million ways to be involved, dates and times are flexible, but Tuesday’s are when we come together and get to play.
