Artist’s Reception: Saturday July 13, 4-6:30PM

Join us for the artist reception and celebration of our 5 Year Anniversary with live music, refreshments, raffle prizes, and more!

About the Exhibition:

With a mixture of high-brow, low-brow, and every brow in between, Studio Quercus is proud to present Space, a massive group exhibition and gallery-wide installation on view July 5 through August 17, 2013.

In true Studio Quercus fashion, 30+ emerging and established artists and curators take over the gallery ‘space’ to create a fully-immersive epic installation. Humor, beauty, absurdity, and awe abound as visitors enter Spaceship Quercus to view works that include painting, drawing, sculpture, video, and installation created around the theme of space and tapping into the imagination of anyone who’s looked up at the stars and wondered “what the heck is going on out there?”.

Participating artists and contributors to the exhibit include Rocky Angel, Emil Barber, Joy Broom, Jeff Carr, Susan Casentini, Arielle Coupe, Nick Diphillipo, Gael Fitzmaurice, Tyler James Hoare, Alex Jackson, Mike Kendall, Abe Kummerow, Grace Lannon, Carrie Lederer, Jerry Leisure, Michael Mew, Kyle Milligan, Sarah Padgham, Marcel Patzwald, Sarah Ratchye, Walter Robinson, Dan Seneres, Susan Sharman, Tim Sharman, Sam Vaughan, and Jim Whiteaker.

The exhibition coincides with Studio Quercus’s 5th Anniversary. Founded in 2008 by Susan Casentini and Kyle Milligan, the interdisciplinary gallery is a space for full-scale individual and group art exhibitions, installations, and performance events located in downtown Oakland. With the community in mind, the non-profit gallery cultivates creative exploration and an exchange of ideas, allowing for the unexpected to happen.

Rebuilding Town Park Sk8 Gallery

KDubLocated at DeFremery Park, the Town Park Sk8 Gallery is a skate park built, created, and administrated by local volunteer and community youth leader Keith “K-Dub” Williams with the help and support of the local skateboard community.  K-Dub worked with the City of Oakland in 2007 to create this skater built wooden structure skate park to allow youth to stay in their own communities instead of having to travel to neighboring cities skate parks.   K-Dub spends much of his time at the skate park working with local youth and hosting events like the Hood Games and other contests, events and demonstrations.  These events draw  the attention of large numbers of both skaters and spectators, even professionals like Karl Watson, Ron Allen, Corey Duffel, Walker Ryan, Theotis Beasley, and Lizard King.

Kid sk8

The Skate Park serves as a social hub for West Oakland youth, encouraging athleticism, discipline, and practice in the sport and art of skateboarding. Over time, the park has suffered from weather and heavy use.  K-Dub began to envision building a project and a program that brings together youth to participate in the process.

DougSk8Doug Kittredge of Anarchitectural and the Establish OakTown Hall Project recently rallied volunteers and materials to help rebuild the most damaged sections of the park because they believe that our youth deserve opportunities to practice and excel in all manner of things that excite them, and that teens in particular deserve more positive places to recreate.

Grand Opening of 10th and Wood!

10andwoodFounder Vlad Levitansky and chef Charles Barksdale announce the opening of 10th & Wood, a casual neighborhood breakfast and lunch café specializing in gourmet sandwiches and burgers in a laid-back setting. Part restaurant and part community meeting spot, 10th & Wood has a to-go counter as well as seating at an outside patio or inside the small, stylish dining area.

The café is the brainchild of Levitansky, a professional clown and Cirque du Soleil alumus who, while traveling with the circus for 15 years, realized he missed a sense of community. Or, as his teacher put it, “no roots, no fruits.” He decided to combine his love of food and his need for roots by opening a hyper-local neighborhood sandwich spot in his West Oakland neighborhood.

With the help of Barksdale, who trained at Le Cordon Bleu in Chicago and grew up two blocks from 10th & Wood, he has developed a menu of gourmet burgers and sandwiches – including their signature part Bahn Mi and part Po’Boy sandwich they playfully call a “Po’Mi” – at affordable prices.IMG_4894

The intention, says Levitanksy, is to create a neighborhood meeting place.

10th & Wood celebrates its soft opening on Monday, July 8, 2013, and will announce a Grand Opening celebration later this month after getting community feedback.

For questions, photos, or press inquiries, please call Vlad Levitansky at (323) 646-0756 or email bulartoh@gmail.com

Alicia Engman – Hammers & Heels

Alicia Engman moved her company, Hammers & Heels, into American Steel Studios a few months ago. With her came her wonderful dog and a load of inspiration. Hammers & Heels is an interior, furniture, and lighting design company which has been featured on the cover of San Francisco Magazine, Apartment Therapy, and Fab.com. They design and fabricate all of their pieces, meaning you get custom heirloom-quality pieces handmade in the San Francisco Bay Area of locally sourced and up-cycled or reclaimed materials.
Her Tag Line is “Green Design for Everyone. Home goods manufactured locally with environmentally friendly materials and methods.” Watching her talk with clients on the second story indoor patio of her studio space, we couldn’t help but ask her more about what happened inside those wooden walls.

AS : What do you do?
Alicia : I bring jobs back to America and reduce our environmental impact while maintaining a unique design sensibility. In a time when manufacturing has all but left the U.S. and every company carries an iteration of the same boring design I try to not only pay people living wages to do what they love but also infuse the work with a look that can’t be found anywhere else.

AS : Why do you do what you do?
Alicia : I believe the only way to make a change is to do it yourself. When I couldn’t find anything unique made ethically or within a reasonable price point I knew there had to be an answer. After a series of trials and errors I find myself learning it is possible it is just a matter of retraining people to know it exists again.

AS : What brought you to Oakland?
Alicia : Complete and total accident. I moved to this coast after coming here for a few weeks then getting so much work I just stayed. I love Oakland, the amount of skilled people here is incredible.

AS : Why AmSteel?
Alicia : Someone mentioned to me about a year ago I should check it out. It wasn’t until I visited that I actually grasped why he suggested AmSteel. It is just full of brilliant, interesting people.

AS : What’s your favorite part of being here?
Alicia : The people! As I mentioned my goal is to bring jobs to people doing what they love and it seems I am on a good path to do just that.

Alicia has formed collaborative partnerships with other craftspeople and artisans here at American Steel, causing some gorgeous ripples in the pool of possibility.

AS : How has AmSteel helped your business?
Alicia : It is a great resource for skilled and talented people. If you ever have a question about anything it’s quite possible someone here has been doing it for 30 years and would be happy to talk with you about it for hours. It is really fun.

AS : What do you contribute to here?
Alicia : I hope a sense of community and mutual respect. I also look forward to having as many people under the H&H umbrella as are a good fit.

AS : Who is your ideal client?
Alicia : An international restaurant franchise. We have one but I always love working with people who appreciate what we do and want to support it as much as I do.

AS : What would you want to tell other artists trying to break into the field?
Alicia : You are no better or less than anyone else, and that hard work, truly hard work, is the only way to make it. If you really love what you do work is fun.

Thank you for taking the time to talk with us Alicia! Your work is absolutely beautiful. Learn more about Hammers & Heels or follow Alicia on her Blog. Alicia is looking for a paid intern who could transition into an employee after a three month evaluation. This intern would be responsible for websites edits and online listings, packing orders, organizing office and shipping logistics, general office care, and some research.  Successful candidates need to be able to take direction from multiple people, have a valid drivers license and a reliable vehicle. To apply: eMail a resume and cover letter to alicia@hammersheels.com

Mens Amplio – interactive art and education

Some of our tenants have taken a leap and they are discovering new inspiration in the combination of using their art for educational purposes.  For the last couple months they have been building a giant human brain (Mens Amplio), operated with an EEG machine, registering brain waves in 15 ft fire and LED light effects. Bringing to life science, math, engineering, construction, and wave theory, their design is poetry in  motion. For many it would have been enough to simply build this beautiful machine. For the Department of Spontaneous Combustion,  the easy road never seems to be enough.  From opening their doors every Tuesday night to teach people the basics and an introduction to the fabricating arts  (7-9pm if you want to come play!) they have found even greater inspiration. Now they are determines to bring the joy of learning that those who have come to their weekly open shops to local Oakland Youth. We managed to catch Kali Snowden in a moment between her personal art projects and her work on Mens Amplio to capture what they are trying to do.  Here’s what she had to say:

mens-amplio_004“We’ve built giant steel sculptures covered in computer controlled light shows before, but this piece has opened up a new possibility for us: Mens Amplio is going to allow us to use our art to show children the wonder that is their own mind. As we were going through the process of designing the techniques and systems we would need to build the project, we were approached by a local school principal who wanted to know if we could show her students the piece in the fall.  The possibilities for teaching kids in of all ages about the design and fabrication of the sculpture, how it works, and what it shows about the brain include art, math, chemistry, biology, electronics, and a range of other subjects. Traditionally as kids, we learn each of these subjects exclusively. Here, we have a chance to create a hands on educational experience that combines and emphasizes how art and technology can work together. Not only is it possible to create something engaging and artistic that is also educational, but this is something big that we are building with our hands. The potential to excite students about these subjects with a giant LED and fire sculpture that they can control with their brains is immeasurable.

An article on Mens Amplio was recently featured by Ignite.me, read it HERE     Help support their project HERE
